- The grenade that seriously injured a 9-year-old boy was bought nearly two years ago by the child's mother, investigators revealed today.
Investigators say sometime around last year's July 4th holiday, the victim Edward Weise III, and his father packed the empty shell of the WWII era grenade and packed it with black powder they had removed from firecrackers.
When the pair tried to detonate the grenade back then, it didn't explode, authorities said.
